Hotlinking, which is sometimes termed bandwidth theft too, identifies linking to images that are on another Internet site. Basically, if you have a site with some images on it, another individual can also build a website and instead of using their own images, they can put links straight to your images. While this might not be such a big problem if you have one small personal site, it will be something very serious if the images are copyrighted, since someone might be attempting to copy your site and trick people. If your web hosting package has a limited monthly bandwidth quota, you might use up all your resources without getting actual visitors, simply because the traffic will be consumed by the other website. This is why you need to think about preserving your content from being hotlinked - not only images, but also documents, since in rare occasions other kinds of files are linked also.

Hotlinking Protection in Cloud Website Hosting

There's a simple way of preventing the hotlinking of your images through an .htaccess file in the website’s root directory, but if you are not very tech-savvy, we also provide a very user-friendly tool that will allow you to activate the protection with just a few mouse clicks and without writing any code. The tool could be accessed via the Hepsia CP, provided with all our Linux cloud website hosting and the only 2 things that you will have to select are a domain/subdomain from a drop-down menu and whether the protection needs to be activated for the main site folder or for some subfolder. Our system shall do the rest, so you will not have to do anything else manually on your end. If you choose to disable the hotlink protection option sometime, you'll just have to come back to the same section, to mark the checkbox next to it and to click on the Delete button.

Hotlinking Protection in Semi-dedicated Hosting

If you have a semi-dedicated server account with us and you notice that somebody has hotlinked any of your images, you may use the protection tool we have developed and included in our in-house built Hepsia hosting CP. When you activate this feature, a server-generated image will appear on the third-party Internet site instead of your real images. You will only have to visit the Hotlink Protection section in the CP and pick the domain or subdomain which your site uses from a handy drop-down menu - it is as basic as that. If necessary, you'll also have the option to activate the function only for a particular subfolder and not for the website in general. Deactivating the protection is just as simple - get back to exactly the same section, check the box next to the particular website and then press the Delete button.
